Raj Marathe: NuRoc DJ

I had the pleasure of meeting Raj Marathe and some of his NuRoc crew a while back while meeting his friends and helping out do what I could in organizing for “Rave:Culture”, which turned out to be a great success. I got to hear him spin, and he really held it together for his set; the crowd loved it and I think it was just a great, honest, and bangin’ DJ set.

Raj provided me with a quick Bio of himself, and I’ll basically just pass it on, almost entirely unedited. Enjoy! ~ Ed Santiago

Artist: Raj Marathe

Affiliations: NuRoc Breaks Crew (Rochester), Hyperkat (San Francisco), Breaks FM (London, NYC)

Styles: Breaks, Dubstep, Electro House, Bassline, Gutterstep, Mashup.

DJ, Producer and Remixer of Breaks (Nu Skool, Funky, Electro, Bassline, and Mashup), Dubstep, and House.

“My music performances can be described as ‘Full of great energy and positive vibes’ and ‘awesome’.

nurocwebgif

DJ Bio: Some have referred to Raj as one of the best DJs out of Upstate Western New York, and across the northeast USA.

While he started as a on-air personality with his own FM radio show from 1999 to 2001 in Rochester, he found himself drawn further getting into the dance scene. Although he didn’t officially become a club DJ until 2002, he began listening to various dance records and then “Techno” and “House” from 1991 onward. He found himself finally able to play dance music he had grown to like for many years.

Raj’s most dominant style has always been Breaks (that includes Funky, Nu Skool, Electro and more.) As the music scene has opened itself up to more production and producers, Raj has found himself amongst them. His remixes and original tracks have found their way into top DJ’s “crates” since he first began to play them.

Big names such as Freq Nasty, The Freestylers, The Autobots, Atomic Hooligan, General MIDI, Sonz of Mecha, Deekline, Future Funk Squad, J-Break, and others- all supporting and playing his tracks. Whether it’s been a massive party in Spain, or a packed club to thousands in San Francisco, blind tests show Raj’s tracks are enjoyed by the many. Raj has also been called “the mashup king of the east coast”, unofficially, for his out-of-this-world mashups. Many dancefloors and danceheads alike have all enjoyed those as well.

Even with all those details said, it doesn’t end there. After several, successful gigs together, Upstate NY DJs Arod, Clotho, and Raj Marathe (all based out of Rochester) formed NuRoc Breaks: Upstate New York’s Breaks Crew! in October of 2004.

Shortly afterwards, Raj was offered a show on the world’s #1 radio station for Breakbeat: London based “Breaks FM.”

At the time, only one american DJ was ever offered a slot on the station, Sean Infinitee, voted as the winner of best mix and scratching contest by listeners across the world.

The birth of the NuRoc Breaks Radio Show began. And with the show broadcasting live across the world, NuRoc’s exposure began to grow.

The NuRoc Crew had started a weekly club night at a club and bar called The Bug Jar, which lasted for almost a year. The crew would then add another DJ to it’s lineup. Noah B.C. was discovered by Raj when he had heard him playing an early guest fill-in slot at an weekly run by a different promoter. The bond only grew, as the crew would later add Nical, the crew’s first female DJ, spanning styles of breakbeat and drum and bass with proper talent.

All DJs were known throughout Rochester at some point, and coming together made for a very special and talented group of DJs. They have been rocking clubs and parties ever since.

The Funkiest Female From The Roc. Period – DJ Annalyze.

She’s performed at the 2008 Grammy’s.

In 2006, she toured with DJ Quik.

She’s toured “…alongside DJ’s such as Q-Bert, A-Trak, Craze, X-Ecutioners, & Klever to name a few,” according to her official site.

She held a residency at Shanghai, China’s Club BonBon.

This Female Wit Funk has one hell of a resume: One of Rochester’s most successful and talented DJ’s, DJ Annalyze is basically a badass, and we’re proud to say she has her roots here in Rochester…

l_340a68240b43aa14b81570b2c6774cb6jpg

“Well I was born & raised in that wonderful city [ROCHESTER] and rep it to the day I die.”

Annalyze, a DJ, Turntablist, Producer/Remixer has been in her profession for nine years and seven months, and the skills and talent she has accumulated over those short nine years has taken her around the world.

“…I’ve been on MTV, [The] Jimmy Kimmel Show [with B-Real and Travis Barker] and¨Ü have DJǃÙd at the 50th Anniversary Grammys…I also hold a residency in Shanghai, China!”

Taken from her Myspace page, Annalyze held “…her first residency in Rochester, NY at Club Vibes. At Vibes, where she played mostly 2-Step, Breaks & House, her passion of music fueled her to explore different possibilities and to take DJ’ing to the next level…”

djannalyzejpg
Rochester Insider

Annalyze’s musical influences are about as diverse as her talent.

“I listen to a ton of sh*t. Seriously my music taste is all over the map but I really like a lot of the New Orleans hiphop (bounce). Always been a huge fan of southern hiphop. Lady sovereignǃÙs new album. Santogold, NASA, Diplo. I’m also dig[ging] a lot of the electro remixes coming out. Anything by Kill the Noise, Metehead, dj kue & so much more.”

Although she no longer resides in the Roc, you can still catch DJ Annalyze performing some occasional local gigs in Rochester; just keep following us here at The REM Group, or at her blog.

(I went up to DJ directly after Anna as one of my first major gigs this past new years eve at One Nightclub in Rochester, and I can honestly say I had more than a few butterflies in my gut. I thought I was going to do some serious damage to the great crowd she seemed to so effortlessly get wild, and see them all quickly disperse at the first beat I put down, but she did a hell of a job and those people wanted to keep on partyin’ thanks to her and Jon Herbert, in my opinion. It was pretty damned cool to go after pro’s like the two of them. – Ed)

one-nightlife-nye-09-flyer1

The most recent DJ Annalyze gig in the Roc

“… when I lived there [Rochester], I was always at Pearl whether I was DJ’ing or not. Best sound in Rochester hands down…Bugjar cause it rules, and the owners are awesome. Lastly Lux . [L]ots of creatures there but still a ton of fun!”

We’re proud to say that DJ Annalyze is from here in Rochester, and that she is doing her thing, representing and bringing solid credibility to the city. If anyone doubts that Rochester lacks any real shining stars, they’re wrong and just need to look at Anna’s career so far and are quickly proven wrong.

In Their Own Words:

“I think the scene in Roc is great. It’s so small there but you have places like Pearl & One that play big room house & eclectic house. Not a lot of small cities could really get away with that. Then you have places like [Venu] & the whole St. Paul quarter for dope hip-hop djs like Wiz & GI!…

Stay tuned for my big tour announcement. Also donǃÙt sleep on Local Talent!! NIkal Fieldz, Kill the Noise, Midnight, Wiz, GI, Richie Salvaggio, [Jon] Herbert. So many great ones…”

UPDATE:

Today, Anna is flying out to London to rehearse with Lady Sovereign for their upcoming US & Canadian tour, so check in at her sites to get the dates!

The new 'Ekonomix' of Rochester.

Entrepreneurship is hip. If anything, that is what native-to-Rochester clothing line creators, Elliott Kirby, Tom Puleo and Jason Rosenberg have to say about it.

These three gentlemen created one of Rochester’s newest clothing lines rooted in the skateboarding, snowboarding and hip-hop communities: Ekonomix Clothing.

The ‘About Us’ section of their official website explains it all:

“Ekonomix Clothing, also known as Ekon, began with a clear goal in mind: to produce stylish, original apparel that met the needs of the skating, snowboarding and hip-hop communities. Since our inception in 2007, however, our mission has expanded to appeal to the board swath of youth in America who truly crave change. In an era of tired brands and worn out logos, our innovative designs are a breath of fresh air…”

newekonfliks032

Ekon has been successful in achieving their goals in being connected and intertwined in the Rochester community by establishing brand recognition which immediately brings to mind a culture which thrives on music scenes and the gathering of people. Where there is entertainment or music, there are people. Where there are entertainment, music, people, or music in Rochester, you just might see a presence of Ekonomix Clothing.

Rochester has been our main source of inspiration. There are some cool things happening here and a common thread among our crew is Rochester pride. We work with Act:Live and Reece Q and continue to grow relationships with local artist[s]. We see our brand breathing life into the scene by being different and hip.”

Ekon has clear, set goals for what they would like their brand to evolve into, and ultimately represent (continued from the ‘About Us’ section of the Ekonomix Official Site):

“…We dig style. We draw from our lifestyle and our surroundings. But most of all, we learn from our customers: you. Hit us up and let us know what you feel; we’re all ears. We’re currently working on designs for spring and summer 2009. Keep a look out for our skaters: we’ll be prominently displaying our family of riders in our upcoming catalogue as well as on our Myspace.

Forget economics. It’s Ekonomix.”

mail

We spoke with Jason Rosenberg from Ekon about the company’s goals for the future, and here’s what he had to say:

“1 year: Ekon hats. More Accounts. 5 years: A warehouse full of clothing and a nice mini ramp. Accounts worldwide. 10 years: Delivering orders on a jetpack, crossing barren war-torn sections of scorched earth, landing in small village communities to trade Ekon.”

Hopefully, in ten years the world won’t be a hostile, barren wasteland where the only form of currency is Ekon clothing – we’d have nowhere to go snowboarding and show off our Ekon gear. Anyways, we too would be very excited to see the Ekon brand representing Rochester riders and company all over the world.

mail-1

“I [Jason Rosenberg] am happy that we collectively care about Rochester. Everyone who is involved has a vested interest in seeing the scene grow and wants to see Rochester prosper as a whole. You donǃÙt often see that in other areas. We have some really talented people here.”

Some of Ekon’s favorite spots in Rochester are ‘The Lock’, The ‘big’ Wegmans, Elixir “…when they are doing Jungle Bums,” and The Dubland Underground.

In Their Own Words:

“Although we are based out of Rochester, our presence is growing in other areas. We have a solid team working to help grow this company and we put in a lot of hours.¨Ü We see Ekonomix as taking a fresh approach, and we’re happy at how well our designs are being received. You can check us out at ekonomixclothing.com or feel free to contact us via myspace.com/ekonomixclothing. We are currently working on designs for spring/summer 09 so keep a look out for our new gear.”

Endever: Bringing Rock back to the Roc.

In five years, Rochester hard rock band Endever would like to be a well established national act – a lofty goal for a band that only just got their start in 2008 at the Ugly Idol competition. However, when you consider they walked away with 2nd place out of 27 well established local acts at that very competition, that goal doesnǃÙt seem too unattainable.

“In a year we would like to be touring through all of New York State and spreading into surrounding states…we keep a realistic perspective knowing this is a hard industry to break into, however we hope that our music speaks for itself.”

The Endever guys are not your typical headbangers. In fact, you probably wouldnǃÙt guess any of them were weekend mosh-pit ringleaders if you saw them on the street. Jim Clark (vocals, guitar), Joe Guida (guitars), James Wright (bass, backing vocals) and Pete Nowak (drums) are four college educated guys that fit right in hanging out at places like Acme Pizza and OǃÙCallaghanǃÙs, but put them on stage together and their inner ‘Rock Gods’ break out harder than a ferocious double bass drum attack.

l_388afafea3e6828067663eb0d60f71df

Combining tried and true late 1990’s post-grunge and alt-metal with a jagged modern rock edge, EndeverǃÙs sound calls to mind comparisons with modern radio rock staples Godsmack and Chevelle. Their influences don’t end there; the guys in Endever draw inspiration from wide ranging styles of music including classical and hip-hop, adding layers of musical texture to their already rich sonic palette. The bandǃÙs debut album, Stealing Fortunes, was produced by Jesse Sprinkle, acoustic singer-songwriter and drummer for national hard rock act Dead Poetic and features a level of polish often not often seen on recordings from local acts.

l_731734fa42de87ed2b1eef61dcfdd0b3

Despite having a killer combination of talent, polish and vision, Endever admits that itǃÙs hard work being in a rock band; taking the effort of promoting their own shows and relying heavily on word of mouth to get their name out there and reaching out to the people who want to rock at their shows. While some people may complain about the lack of big-name rock acts that play Rochester venues these days, Endever sees that as a good thing, noting how the local scene is experiencing tremendous growth and renewed interest by local rock fans.

“You always have your die hard local lovers who will always be there but, it would be nice to be able to get to the point were you are able to book a show do know pre-sale and have 100, 200, 300 show up just because youǃÙre a good band.”

l_f08ddfe5c167214730a1d1a769f04514

Endever is:

Jim Clark (Lead Vocals & Guitar)

Jim has been singing and playing guitar since high school and has since began to hone his skills, coming into his own as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter. His personal influences include legendary singer/songwriters Jim Croce and Bob Dylan, along with modern singers Jon Foreman (Switchfoot), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), and Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle). Jim is an All-American Wrestler. Jim plays Ibanez Guitars.

Joey Guida (Guitars)

A classically-trained cellist, Joe began his guitar career in high school, writing songs with Jim in his spare time. Using his 6 and 7-string Schecter guitars and an array of effects, Joe’s guitar work is innovative, powerful, and full of expression. His influences include modern-rock bands Disturbed, Thousand Foot Krutch, Nightwish, and many others. Joe is attending college to become a meteorologist. Joe plays Schecter Guitars.

James Wright (Bass & Backing Vocals)

James has been playing the bass for 15 years. His vocal harmonies are a great complement to Jim’s powerful leads. He has lent his skills as a trained bassist to many venues, including the Rochester Broadway Theatre League, Stars of Tomorrow, Moonbeams to Earth, and various Jazz ensembles. He is also a member of local hip-hop group The Wrong Mind. James is attending college to become a pharmacist. James plays Warwick and Ibanez basses.

Pete Nowak (Drums & Percussion)

Pete has been playing the drums since age four, and has since become a highly-sought-after drummer in the Rochester area. He performs/has performed with The Deborah Magone Band, With Open Eyes, Dive, Halcyon Night, and various jazz and rock outfits. He is also a Sergeant in the Rochester Scottish Pipe and Drum Corps. Pete has a degree in Music Industry with a concentration in music production from SUNY Oneonta. He plays Mapex Drums and Zildjian Cymbals.

In Their Own Words:

ǃ?Support the local music scene you never know whoǃÙs going to be who in the next secondǃ? also donǃÙt just stand for taking what is shoved in your face when It comes to music, seek out new sounds and donǃÙt be afraid of listening to music that makes you feel something. I think to often people settle for generic numbness in music.”
