The Rochester Killharmonic Orchestra & KC Tea & Noodles

RKO

Hay everyone,

Zach H. here, first time poster. I wanted to let everyone know about one of the cityǃÙs premier ambient, experimental and quasi-avant-garde regularly occurring music events. Of course IǃÙm talking about the Rochester Killharmonic OrchestraǃÙs weekly jam session. I hesitate to call it an open mic, though some might have you believe so. I also hesitate to call it noise night, as that might turn everyone off.

So What Is It? I think of it as a listening party, a get together and a hang out. ItǃÙs a place where open minded musicians can come together and be loud. Every Sunday, located on 373 South Goodman at the KC Tea & Noodles, the venue with its kitchen and bar provide a nice, upscale environment for the music and its creators. This event is FREE, it is WEEKLY and is totally OPEN to the public.

There is one more thing I would like to mention. The RKO takes quite seriously its task of creating open music. This city has seen many modes of experimentation with music and some of those attempts have gone well. If you were hip enough to know about the AV Space, than this might be something that interests you. If you ever went to the Studio at Potential Life on Elton, then you probably already know what I’m about to say. The point is, I know as well as anybody that making noise can get kind of noisy and chaotic.

Not the RKO. The RKO utilizes formatting techniques first recognized at the Elton galleries. The format is this: Musicians arrive and sound check to get a feel for each other. They then put their names on a piece of paper and the paper is thrown into a bowl. The night is set up so that there are multiple sets for each musician to get an opportunity to play. Each set comes from drawing names randomly, sometimes as much as 7 at a time, sometimes as few as 2 or 3. This format works because it introduces each musician and ensures that there will never be a redundant performance by any means. The end of the night culminates with the final set in which everybody gets on and plays together, in what is sometimes a beautiful sonic moment, or a crazy din.

The goal is to take the crazy din and transmutate it into a beautiful sonic moment. The RKO is interested in taking what we are given and presenting forth artful, thoughtful, beautiful music.

So there you have it. The Rochester Killharmonic Orchestra. In case you forgot or missed it, it’s every Sunday at 737 South Goodman at the KC Tea & Noodles starting at 8. I hope to see you there.
